Problem
Describe the problem
FISH. FOOD. FEEL GOOD. (F3G), a unique San Diego 501c3 non-profit has one simple goal: collect unwanted fish from sport fishermen and distribute these nutritious fish to local charities in need for free. Please go to the F3G website to learn more: www.f3g.org.
Biodiversity Impact
F3G is a truly unique sustainable charity that will exist as long as fishermen donate fish. There is no cost to the fisherman who donates fish. The charities receive fish for free and have the option to receive fish whole (and fillet it themselves) or have a processing company fillet it for them (at a reduced rate). The quality protein found in fish is far healthier than the protein normally purchased (meat - beef) by charities due to the relatively high costs when compared to meat. The processing company covers their expense while benefiting from goodwill within the fishing community. All head and guts are returned to the ocean as bait for crab/lobster fishermen relieving excess burden on landfills. Fishermen are reminded about their catch are release option. Activists are also encouraged to direct their efforts toward the commercial fishermen (trawlers, long line fishermen, purse seiners) who account for 99% of all migratory pelagic fish killed.
Solution
same answer for question 6 // F3G takes unwanted fish and feeds about 50,000 people in need this nutritious protein per year
Replicability
How many years has your solution been applied? 2 years // Have others reproduced your solution elsewhere? No // Simplicity is one of the best attribute of F3G, once partnerships are in place the programs runs on its own requiring very little manpower. When the 1000 pound fish crate is full the processing company calls which ever charity is next in line to come and pick up their bounty.
