Describe your solution

neem oil is an organic pesticide. neem oil have “…no unreasonable adverse effects,” making it safe for our environment. a.) Insects do not become immune to neem oil pesticides, as they can with other types of pesticides. c.) Because neem oil is biodegradable and non-toxic, it will not pollute ground water or cause toxic runoff into streams and nearby bodies of water. Good Heart Progressive I have been able to mobilise farmers to produce neem oil. we intend to have seminars across the country to educate farmers about neem. (My solution to poultry waste pollution): this is a system I made by building poultries on ponds so has to subsidies the amount of feed being consumed by fishes in the pond. According to Feed conversion ratio of feed consumed by chicken it is discovered that a chicken only make use of 50% of the nutrients in their feed and rest are being excreted as poo which still contains about 45% of the feed nutrients. This system allows poo from the poultry above to enter into the water for the consumption of the fishes. (solution to organic pollution in aqua culture and local water sources and LACK OF WATER FOR AQUA CULTURE DUE TO CLIMATE): Aquaponics or pisciponics, is a sustainable food production

Members Good Heart Progressive Cooperative Society Family and Friends My Clients in Abuja and Environs I was able to implement the above solution because i care a lot about nutrition and I a have desire to make research on bio diversity in our mode of farming most especially in Africa where we are accustom to our traditional way of farming. so I look for farmers who had the same interest at heart and I led them through this entire process. We share knowledge and ideas on how to make things even better. How i ensured that my solution was adopted in my locality by organising series of training for farmers and farms who bought totally into these.

What is the environmental or ecological challenge you are targeting with your solution?

Crop farming in tropical savannah Nigeria climate encourages rapid growth of pest, insect and diseases Usage of Toxic Pesticide on farmland and crops Lack of water for aquaculture due to in tropical savannah climate Air pollution and environmental pollution from poultry waste: A 90% of poultry farms situated in the settlement have a challenge of how to dispose off the waste from their poultry here by causing air pollution of the environment. Organic waste pollution within culture tanks and ponds and run off’s to local water source: Earth pond in Nigeria are built to hold water until ITS OBSERVED THAT THE ammonia WASTE IN PONDS level is high before its RUN-OFF into LOCAL WATER SOURCES. 95% of aqua culturist run-off their organic waste into the local water sources or flowing streams

Describe the context in which you are operating

Organic waste water pollution and organic waste run-off’s into local water sources:One of the effects of organic pollutants is enriched waters in terms of pollution of the waters called "eutrophication". Some disadvantages of eutrophication phenomena are: The reduction of dissolved oxygen as a key parameter. The next will result in reduced levels of BOD, the falling value of pH, ammonia levels rise. It is as a result of the activity of bacteria that use oxygen to break down food in the waters which runs off to local water sources
Lack of water for aqua culture due to tropical savannah climate
Desertification, a phenomenon referring to land degradation in arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid regions as a result of climatic variations and human activities, is considered as one of the most severe environmental and socio-economic problems of recent times.  The long dry season starts earlier and ends later. Here there is nothing like the August break, therefore the two wet seasons become one.

Usage of toxic pesticide on farmland and crops:
Use of synthetic pesticide is vey toxic, thereby affecting the ecosystems and non-target organisms. Acute and chronic pesticide poisoning usually results from consumption of contaminated food. About 15,000 metric tons of pesticides comprising about 135 pesticide chemicals are imported annually into the country. In Nigeria, food test carried out on 217 different food items revealed the presence of DDT, Aldrin and Dieldrin .

How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?

i have improved bio diversity in the following ways: have been able to integrate poultry farming and aqua culture together hereby dealing with air pollution at the same time proving food for the fishes. i have also been able to find other means of controlling pest other than the toxic pesticide being used before hereby cubing toxic waste from building up in the environment which could be harmful to the other living things around us and to human as well. i have also being able to find a way to integrate aquaponics system into my aquapoultry integrated system which is responsible to feed the plants with nutrient and also filter returning into the system hereby conserving 90% of water.

My solutions are very sustainable mean that they are affordable, cost efficient and they are reliable. though grant is needed to produce on a larger scale. anyone could afford to start this in a small scale.

Return on investment

its cost about thirty thousand naira($62.5 current rate to naira) to implement the neem oil programme in a small scale to reach about 1000 farmers monthly. it will take approximately about two hundred thousand naira($416.6 current rate) to build aquapoultry and aquaponic system in a small scale.

How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?

the solutions provided above is replicable in any part of the world and its cheaper to make behind every home for your convenience without any kind of pollution Yes, In small scale. poultry holds about 60 birds on a concrete pond that holds about 1000 post juvenile catfishes. For neem it depends on the amount of leafs and seeds you could harvest.
