The current high cost of fuel used to pump irrigation water is limited and production and competitiveness of domestic producers of horticultural crops, among others. For example, only to irrigate the crop of potatoes, Honduras requires around 120,500 diesel gln (If 40% of sown area is irrigated), that the current cost of 4.12 dollar/gln means an expenditure for the item over 485467.53 dollar in lps 10 million, reducing the income of the producers of potatoes planted in the dry season 5849.8837 dollar for each increase of diesel. Failure to grow potatoes in the dry season means that the country will need to import about 50% of its needs, in addition to the loss of at least 10,000 jobs and a sharp reduction in the income of potato growers. An alternative to using oil is gaining popularity pumping irrigation water using solar energy. According to the manufacturers, are efficient systems if used with drip irrigation systems, low pressure, require minimal maintenance and have a shelf life of at least 20 years (Kothe, 1993, Mller, 1992; Oheimb, 1994). In addition, Honduras can use the fact received high levels of solar radiation, especially during the dry season, which is the season of more need for irrigation. The system consists of drawing water from wells or surface sources with pumps powered by solar panels. The extracted water is collected in a tank located near the growing area at a height of at least 3 m, from where it is discharged to drip irrigation tapes working at low pressure (0.2 bar). The system variable flow water pumps depending on solar radiation, being greater on clear days and hours of more light, around noon.

What were/are the challenges your community faced in implementing this solution?
funding to adopt this technology solar irrigation system. something shocking will have a project of this type that will be the first in the area Organizing cooperatives.
They installed an irrigation system with solar energy santa Catarina experimental station specifically to the plot assigned to potato research. Within this station are made different potato research with the goal of completing the various studies of the potato varieties that are affected by climate change as giving negative results to production in this area since se'produce the 80% of potatoes consumed in the country due to lack of irrigation systems to develop this work and serving as a model for transfer to an irrigation system producers such as solar energy is what will come to educate, transfer and breaking the paradigm of our producer to use internal combustion engines to agricultural pumping. We have an example that make the difference our small potato farmers in our country 70-80% are small producers extensions. By using this irrigation system using solar energy reduce 0.2 tonnes of CO2 per year by avoiding derivatives consume fossil fuels as we are a country that depend on the import of petroleum products. WE ARE A PEOPLE WHO LIVE ON LESS THAN A DOLLAR A DAY BY AND FAO.
First avoid CO2 emissions into the environment by consuming leave fossil fuels. We use a com inexhaustible energy source is the sun. Be for educational purpose because we have a model of technology transfer papers., Further research will be developed and we can use the land in different seasons. It is noteworthy that this project will be installed in an area that is not returned to produce the strawberry crop because they lost the right climate for the crop in the wake of climate change so strawberry imported from neighboring countries.
How has your solution increased the capacity of the ecosystem to adapt to potential climate changes?
This project will have double effect: 1 will continue to develop research on varieties resistant to climate change and disease because arem tests at different times of the year. 2. avoid CO2 emissions of the gases that produce the greenhouse effect. 3. We avoid the exploitation and consumption of fossil fuels.
support food security by reducing land will produce effects on climate change as it is a great start adopting environmentally friendly technologies.
works directly and indirectly as these producers are highly dependent on agriculture and not protecting or developing research will look more affected.
Transferring technologies driving producers to Santa Catarina experiemental station to provide the experience with new solar irrigation system
Yes, you can replicate, the first is funding, then a strategic point as it is experimental stations, then as an institution are at the forefront of innovation, production costs are not affected by the rise of fuel. be innovative as we are a developing country and the producers of this area do not know this kind of technologies and awaken interest.
