Due to the unrelenting degradation of its ecosystems, uncontrolled urbanization, loss of biodiversity, lack of natural resource management, deforestation, Haiti is one of the developing countries that is suffering the full effects of adverse effects Of climate change. A cyclone, a heat wave or heavy rain is enough to wipe out crops or flood residential areas. So many dangers that my participation in Solution Search: Farming for Biodiversity has decided to tackle. Describe your solution

Terre des Jeunes gives utmost importance to the training of young people in local schools and groups; farmers' associations; associations of young people; and women's groups. Widespread training ensures the mobilization for eco-citizen actions and awareness of the population to respect trees (including limitation of logging). Terre des Jeunes will train the planters to practice Moringa plants The mobilization will continue throughout the 12 months of the project through a field presence of Terre des jeunes for the duration of the project. Work will be coordinated and planned by a supervisor present on site Why in the nursery Moringa? In the long list of super-food (these foods that contain a string of good things for the body), moringa is taking the first place. Finally, traditional medicine confers virtues to fight against headaches and sudden weight loss; to improve the immune system and slow down skin aging. Describe your implementation

Project objectives: 1. Improve the living conditions of the inhabitants of Gros-Morne and Gonaives by revitalizing green spaces. 2. Fight against the drying up of springs observed in recent years in promoting reforestation by the infiltration of storm water that feed the water table (aquifers) in the area. 3. Protect the perimeter of capture of the two springs that have provided water throughout the Gros-Morne and city of Gonaives (population 130,000) throughout its history to reduce the effects of drought. The area surrounding the springs should be of particular concern for reforestation. 4. Protect the population against the risk of flooding by rainwater and against the risk of landslides. 5. Improve agricultural production through more efficient irrigation but also in fruit production as part of the planting program. 6. Train the population in agro-forestery techniques including nursery production, as well as organic fertilization (compost, green manure). Activities: 1. Mobilization of the community around the project explanation meetings 2. Acquisition of seeds from seed banks who are partners of Terre des Jeunes in Haiti, according to the preselection of species carried out with the population. 3. What is the environmental or ecological challenge you are targeting with your solution?

Environmental problems in Haiti are becoming increasingly threatening. In Haiti, the population density is on average 200 inhabitants / km2. Some agricultural areas reach up to 800 inhab / km2 In addition, some studies present Haiti as a mountainous country where 60% of the surface area is made up of a slope of more than 20%. The country is also vulnerable to climate change, which can be observed through the magnitude of changes in temperature and precipitation. In order to meet the demand for woodfuel, the country is obliged to cut 12 million trees annually. This corresponds to consumption ranging from 3.4 to 4.05 million tonnes of fuelwood (1 326 000 and 1 580 000 tonnes of oil equivalent). Of this total, 37% is taken to be converted into charcoal, the amount of which varies between 250 and 280 000 tonnes each year

Describe the context in which you are operating

Haiti is experiencing an alarming deterioration in its environment, which accelerated in the early 1960s and became critical from 1985 onwards. Today, forest cover is estimated at less than 2%. In this context, TERRE DES JEUNES accompanies the efforts of villagers whose roadmap plans to increase forest cover up to 5% in the space of five years.

How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?

We have carried out conservation projects of biomass, biodiversity, soil and water with dry stone walls with the financial support of the World Food Program on an area of 8 thousand square meters These organic mechanic actions allow nature / mountains to regenerate themselves after work with dry stone walls. The results of these projects have The planting of 11,560 fruit trees (mango, orange, chadequiers, lemon trees) The planting of 8,000 forest trees (oaks, brakes, cedars, cassia, mahogany, eucalyptus) Treatment of 3 km of gullies The construction of 401 thresholds The valorization of the protected areas between the thresholds by banana suckers and yam mounds The construction of 25,000 linear meters of vegetal strips with sugar cane and pineapple

Water

In Haiti river water which can be highly turbid is used for drinking purposes. Natural coagulants have been used for centuries in traditional water treatment practices throughout certain areas of the developing world. Crushed Moringa clarify and purify water to suit domestic use and lower the bacterial concentration in the water making it safe for drinking. By using Moringa seeds people will no longer be depending on expensive. Using Moringa to purify water replaces chemicals.

Food Security/Nutrition

Moringa leaves have all the essential amino acids, beneficial fatty acids and omega oils. Moringa has quantities rich in calcium, iron and many other vital minerals, as well as a wide variety and large amount of vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. Moringa leaves can be consumed fresh, cooked or as powder. It can be used in tea, in capsules, added to beverages, sprinkled in salades or soup etc. Moringa leaves & powder have no proven bad side effects

Economic/Sustainable Development

The Moringa leaves have all the essential amino acids, beneficial fatty acids and omega oils. Moringa has quantities rich in calcium, iron and many other vital minerals, as well as a wide variety and large amount of vitamins, antioxidants and anti-inflammatories.In addition to the increase in yields of Moringades crop yields ipso facto increased income for farmers, the "associated" crop has allowed them to have additional income through the sale of wood and/or charcoal from their tree plantation

Climate

The strong variations of certain climatic factors, notably the temperature have been attenuated thanks to the presence of planted trees. Although not yet verified to date, there is already a suspicion of a likely positive effect of plantations on other factors such as rainfall. Because Moringa Trees grow fast and well in dry areas, it can play a role in the battle against desertification. The presence of long taproot makes Moringa resistant to periods of drought.

Sustainability

For smallholder farmers in drylands, a failed harvest can mean months of malnutrition and hardship. "Conventional" crops are often not native and require expensive inputs, significant irrigation and land preparation in order to produce a successful harvest.
This means that they are more vulnerable to droughts. Trees, on the other hand, often survive when other crops fail. In this case, economic sustainability is based on production and market-based revenues

How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?

1. Project implementation is coordinated by Haitian professionals in the agroforestry community, working in association with Terre des Jeunes. The three main stakeholders are: Stakeholders / Task / Qualification / Experience (years) Augustin Dieuseul, Agronomist, environmentalist, Project Coordination, 13 years’ experience.
