Problem

Hazard

Storm Surge

Identify the likelihood and frequency of this hazard

Very likely in the coming years.

Explain how vulnerable the community is to this hazard

Witness Super Storm Sandy with $60 billion in damage.

List the potential affects of this hazard

Property devastation and potential loss of life.

Identify how sensitive the community is to these affects

Progressively less so as Super Storm Sandy publicity has declined. President Obama has opened the Climate Change discussion which is great.
Action

Preparedness Goal

Practical Solutions through Built Environment & Advocacy through The NRF. See our PEP measures and White Paper.

Implementation Actions

Helps provide the necessary capital for protecting infrastructure and large scale buildings by making them more sustainable and resilient.

Solution

Describe Your Solution

We have found it necessary to combine Sustainability measures (CHP, Geothermal, Solar, Wind, LED Lighting, Building Envelope changes, Curtain Wall changes, Property orientation, etc.) which are generally more financeable with Resilience measures (flood proofing, stormwater management, protecting mechanical systems in the event of a future climate event) to come up with a total solution both at the large scale building level and public infrastructure level as well.

Results

Economic?

We are cutting energy costs by 5-50%+ in large scale buildings.

Environmental?

By combining the S + R we are helping protect our Built Environment.

Social?

We believe these efforts are necessary to protect humanity and the species that are rapidly disappearing.

What were the negative or unintended impacts (if any) associated with implementing this solution?

N/A

Replication/Scale

Return on Investment: How much did it cost to implement these activities? How do your results above compare to this investment?
