An Overview Of Our Solution
The goal for the collaborative art project of Artists and Scientists would involve research, development and designing of a new public art project entitled ‘Nature VS Nature’. The project will be a combination of original artworks involving interdisciplinary process of art that investigates, how Human nature and behavior works against the Mother Nature, and the creations will response to the Climate Change in 10 Asian Countries.
Nature VS Nature will be based upon a deconstruction of three primary sources: 1) analyzing 100 years history of climate change in the area, 2) public reaction and response to the continuation of climate change; 3) present affect of climate change. The whole project would focus on the projected local area to raise awareness and solutions through the Art Work creation.
- Population Impacted: 5,00,000 people (Approximate)
- Continent: Asia
Context Analysis
The project in specific region will have a specific Theme-Line to guide artists to focus on the specific issue in their work. The aim of this project is to bring art as public intervention, which must lead to raise public consciousness about climate change and public behavior. Involvement of community people, mainly young people and children is one of the expectations.
This project will be a combination of multiple, workshops, exhibitions in public space and indoor space together, film presentation and discussions, etc. focusing the fact of food security, agriculture, extinction of creatures, community factors, ecological challenges, natural calamities, consumption, usage of products, plants and energies, consumerism in the society, etc.
Describe the technical solution you wanted the target audience to adopt
We believe and realize that Art is the best way to have greater positive impact on problems, and to create solution for it. The vision of this art project is to make people adopted with changing behavior.
This project will introduce a workshop for artists and scientists in each projected area, to research on the current manmade and unavoidable issues Climate Change. Each artist and scientist will work for a certain period to create technical solution for specific issues and they will be assigned for it.
It is easy to describe an overall estimation or notion of the project without a proper structure; however, in this way the results are not always perfect. So this is why creating a structure of Artists and Scientists, finalizing projected issue to start research is the best for work. We believe this is the first step for finding technical solution.
Type of intervention
Describe your behavioral intervention
Climate Change is a long-term change in the Earth’s overall temperature with massive and permanent ramifications. Human behavior is the root cause of climate change and it can also be the solution. The purpose of this project is to create public awareness through art.
To select the working area is also a big task. The project will primarily focus on the consumerist behavior of the community people. The consumerist behaviors of the community have a greater negative impact on the social and environmental attitude. In this case the research work should involve the basics requirements of chemistry that work to develop the behavior. Here the social classification is also involved.
Consumer oriented businesses and their master plans produce almost similar products over and over in a variety of presentable way, and which is the most deadly approach to environment. These increase cost, demands, dependence attitude, wastage, use of natural resources and space, etc. So these all the factors need a lot of work and research to change the related behaviors, and the Art will help community to adopt the desired behavior.
As needed, please explain the type of intervention in more detail
The whole project would be a public art project to bring art to the public and will reach the highest public interaction. It will create space for intervention in many different and effective categories.
They are:
Public emotional attachment
Consumerist behavior
Expected Lifestyle if the society
Site-specific attitude
Direct connections with nature
Etc.
Describe your implementation
This project will be a combination of multiple workshops and exhibitions in public space and indoor space together, film presentation and discussions. a) For workshops we will focus on the traditional activities and objectives, which has been followed in some region as positive attitude to the environment, such as traditional ways of living, natural ways of production, etc. and also we can run workshops about the risks the city faces and what could be done to mitigate them. b) For the public art activities, artists will create innovative ideas to involve people, where idea of public interaction would be focused. Artist may work on many different ways, sculpting, installing object, painting, graffiti, performance, etc. A part of these activities can be displayed in an indoor space in Taiwan and I will bring the show as an exchange exhibition in Bangladesh for the audience here and the exhibition will be displayed in a gallery in Dhaka. c) Film show could be very engaging activity in the community, where films or video works on certain issue can be presented. d) Seminars and discussions are always effective ways to circulate thoughts and ideas to the community. These will have significant impression on local scene.
To work on this massive global issue Climate Change, these ideas and art activities can be seemed as a pinpoint to a mass. However I believe bunch of art activities and discussion around the world must create tremendous workforce to fight Climate Change.
External connections
Fine Art Faculties and Engineering institutions might works as key partner, however Fine ART-DU and BUET are confirmed for the project in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
The public art project primarily focused on consumerism and cultural practice in the society, will connect different classes of people, will have impact on their life style, which results in the social and business policy and finance. It will also connect the local art and cultural promotion, which also work as navigator in the social combined behavior.
Who adopted the desired behaviors and to what degree?
General and community people are expected to adopt the behavior through the public art activities, involvement and interventions, community service, etc. The spontaneous activities and involvement will work to ensure the impact in their common behavior to the desired level. Actually the real motivation will from the behind the scene, because of the power of Art, which is able to drag the entire traditional notion, works against the environment.
How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?
Use of natural resources will not be stopped, until it is affordable and available. But I believe art motivation is something that will find out the efficiency of alternative options. And this is the actual methodology of the art motivation in public.
What were some of the resulting co-benefits?
This proposed art project will also co-benefits the education system, economics, water, food and agriculture, community development, etc.
Sustainability
The economic sustainability of the solution does not really reply on the immediate finding. However, funding is necessary to continue smoothly the other requirements.
Return on investment
This proposed project would incorporate the brand new, which is not yet open for audience. However, certain closed-door research was done. In addition we have done some similar project in a very tint format in Dhaka, in terms of project design, and which did cost for execution around 250K BDT.
How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?
It has not been done before, though I have envisioned to work on this project in at least 10 Asian countries: Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. In the mid of October A similar project will be executed in Taipei, Taiwan in collaboration with Asian Cultural Council and Bamboo Curtain Studio. That project will introduce 2 separate workshops, 2 exhibition and seminars.
