Results

What is the environmental or ecological challenge you are targeting with your solution?

Pesticides are toxic chemicals designed to be deliberately released into the environment and is meant to kill a certain pest or is targeted to a disease, a very large percentage of pesticides reach a destination other than their target. They enter the air, water, sediments, and even end up in our food. Pesticides have caused detrimental effect on Air, water, soil health, Nitrogen fixation, birds, Aquatic life, Amphibians etc. We with our Ayurvedic Plant products are providing a scalable alternative solution to fix above problems.

Describe the context in which you are operating

The demand for organic food is steadily increasing both in the developed and developing countries with an annual average growth rate of 20–25%. Similarly the demand for Organic Pest Control is being increased by 15-25% annually. Increasing consciousness about conservation of environment as well as health hazards associated with agrochemicals and consumers’ preference to safe and hazard free food are the major factors that lead to the growing interest in alternate forms of pesticides in the world. Organic agriculture via Organic pesticides is one among the broad spectrum of production methods that are recently being supportive to the environment. Ayurveda is the most ancient Indian science available to mankind which provides solution to different kind of problems. Various Ayurvedic herbs have different properties and combination of various herb is also used to cure various problems in human, animals and plants. The Ayurvedic plant medicine which we are promoting helps to lower the agri-input cost and provides growth and control of pest and diseases without affecting the yield. The concoction of various parts of herbs is used as-it-is for sustainable organic farming. The products are certified organic under National Program of Organic Production (NPOP) of government of India. The products are also incubated in ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi for its innovation.

How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?

In Agriculture the contribution of synthetic agri inputs is quite high. Our products do not use fossil fuel while preparation and energy consumption is just at single level which is negligible. It contributes in lowering of carbon footprints in hence contributing in lowering of GHGs emission in agriculture. After studying the market carefully it was only two ways through which we can bring the change to replace the harmful pesticides. Firstly was by targeting the Agri-input dealers, where our success was good as we were able to change many dealer to adopt these new Ayurvedic products, some agreed to give choice to the farmers and let them choose organic over chemicals. Secondly was through NGOs and government extension centers which we are in process. The low cost and Indian indigenous was one of the key enablers to lower the cost of agri-inputs in the field. The farmers have become very particulars about the water, human and livestock health which made them to move towards organic solution

Social/Community

There was always willingness within the community to try a good non-toxic alternative to do the farming. The telephonic surveys have helped us to understand the problems which farmers are facing in terms of their health and livestock health. This motivates farmers towards an organic solution.

Water

While discussing the problem on phone, pollution of ground water sources came as one of the areas where farmers are getting aware and learning to move towards eco friendly way of controlling pests.

Food Security/Nutrition

Global food production is more than enough to feed the global population, the problem is efficient distribution. So it’s very important to produce healthier way of food production so that after distribution the population is nutrition secured without toxicity in the food. The Ayurvedic pesticides have shown efficient way to control pest & diseases without effecting the production & yield. At many cases farmers had higher production due to increase immunity and plant health resulting in more flow

Economic/Sustainable Development

Organic Ayurvedic pesticides consider the medium- and long-term effect of agricultural interventions on the agro-ecosystem. Many changes observed in the environment are long term and will occur slowly with time. The mains aim of farmers are taking proactive approach to produce food while establishing an ecological balance to prevent soil health & pest problems.

Climate

The increased use of Ayurvedic Plant Medicines will reduce the use of high quantity fossil fuel and it contributes to mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming and will help to retain the organic content in the soil. It will help to reduce climate stresses on plant and with the increased immunity it can sustain for longer period at the time of stress.

Sustainability

The products are low cost and scalable across geographies and have been shown positive results in the market. The market is still growing and many countries and states are still in process to change the policy towards open choice. Indian government has been promoting and some specific changes was done in various state based policy. Considering the slow change in policy there is requirement of grant for minimum 03-04 years to reach a scale where market based revenue becomes regular.

Return on investment

The return on investment is positive after 3rd years from now which ranges from 20-25%. The products were developed and research by self-funding whose value could be more than 1 million Indian rupee. Further approx $1.5 million requires for scientific analysis and same amount for market development.
