An Overview Of Our Solution
We came up with the idea for the KARE Campaign in our work with various volunteer programs. We have been able to study the human behavior of the general public as well as environmentalists and what makes each "tick." We concluded that in order to make the most impact on the general public we should give incentives. The incentives must bring environmental and ecosystem awareness to help bring a personal connection to our nature.
We have partnered with property managers and property owners, who champion the environment, in various areas around the world to RAFFLE off week long vacations at various properties. We have also partnered with local watermen and riverkeeper groups to donate a trip on the water for daily raffles.

Context Analysis
After working many environmental events we noticed how well raffles worked especially if you have the right prize! So why not take the $ part out and use different behaviors to award raffle tickets. We can potentially turn ANY behavioral issue into a raffle ticket with the participant posting a picture or video of them doing the specific environmental act or behavior.
Describe the technical solution you wanted the target audience to adopt
The technical solution would be to use our app and also using specific #hashtags with social media posts.
Type of intervention
Describe your behavioral intervention
After working many environmental events we noticed how well raffles worked especially if you have the right prize! So why not take the $ part out and use different behaviors to get raffle tickets. We can potentially turn ANY behavioral issue into a raffle ticket with the participant posting a picture or video of them doing the specific environmental act or behavior.
As needed, please explain the type of intervention in more detail
Our idea applies to all 3 interventions because using incentives and prizes allow the participants to win trips and learn more about our local and worldly ecosystems. We have partnered with property managers and owners in various areas around the world to RAFFLE off vacations at their properties. We have also partnered with local watermen and riverkeeper groups to donate a trip on the water for daily raffles. This makes it more personal and leaves more of an impact on individuals and giving them an experience and personal reason to make the behavior changes.
Describe your implementation
We have partnered with property managers and property owners, who champion the environment, in various areas around the world to RAFFLE off week long vacations at their properties. We have also partnered with local watermen and riverkeeper groups to donate trips on the water for daily raffles. We have received a great response from the general public in Costa Rica with just over 11,000 people participating in our first raffle. The only obstacle we had was reaching some of the rural areas to have participation.
External connections
We have partnered with various riverkeeper, tour groups, property managers and property owners in Costa Rica. Some of the organizations that helped develop our solution are The Sloth Institute of Costa Rica, Kids Saving the Rainforest, and Tule Cafe. We have also received help in the development of our solution from Severn River Association, The Coast Keeper, Maryland Farm Bureau, and the Maryland Dept. of Environment and Agriculture.
Who adopted the desired behaviors and to what degree?
We had over a 11,000 entries into our inaugural raffle. That is 11,000 environmental actions that participants did cognitively. This leads to the ability to create repetition and good habits for the future.
How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?
In our raffle we have specific environmental acts for natural resources like turning the water off while brushing teeth, which can save 200 gallons of water a month, a watermen's shower, which saves 10 gallons of water a shower, and washing hands. Some other acts for raffle entries were riding public transportation, carpooling, and even telecommuting.
What were some of the resulting co-benefits?
As stated above, we have a variety of environmental acts that anyone can do from bringing your own bag to the store which reduces plastic use, if you buy at a farmer's market, since it is local it creates sustainable development as well as cuts back on CO2 emissions.
Sustainability
Our KARE (Kids Act, Reward, and Engage) Campaign can sustain because it relies on the good nature of people.
Return on investment
The project did not cost us anything except for time making contacts in key areas. We had just over 11,000 entries in our first raffle with $0 investment. Each entry is an act that is positive for the environment which can now be put in the subconscious to spur that behavior change.
How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?
As long as the particular area has internet and the ability to take pictures and post we can replicate this anywhere and to any scale, even globally. We would need to establish key partners in every area and create an entry form to get some basic information from each participant to see what kind of "Rewards" they are interested in.
