Farming for Biodiversity

APRODEA

Bukavu, Congo - Kinshasa

An Overview Of Our Solution

THIS PROJECT IS TO RESTORE FOREST AND LAND DEGRADATION AND PROMOTE BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION. Riverside communities of KAHUZI BIEGA NATIONAL PARK contributing to deforestation and destruction of this habitat should benefit some project conducive them to a tvoid trees cutting. And the 32 72O small agricultural producers should adopt good agricultural practices complying with environment and biodiversity requirement

Solution

Describe your solution

We organize training of trainers, and we select area as demonstrative plot where every producer will learn And practices in his own field
Implementation

Describe your implementation

THERE ARE 16 PRINCIPLES THAT WE IMPLEMENT BY PLOT TO COMPLY TO ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENT 1.TO OBTAIN HEALTHY SEEDS 2. CHOOSE FERTILE SOILS AND LOCATIONS SUITABLES FOR CROPPING 3. ADOPT GOOD NURSERY PRACTICES AND COMPLY WITH HYGIENE REQUIREMENT 4.USE SPACERS AND DEVICES SUITABLES FOR PLANTING 5.PLANT THE CROPS TO COINCIDE THEIR GROWTH PERIOD WITH A LOW INCIDENCE OF PESTS AND DISEASES 6. PRACTISE CROP ROTATION 7.ADOPT GOOD SOIL CONSERVATION PRACTICES 8.ADOPT SUITABLE WATER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES 9.WEED REGULARY 1O. BOOST THE POPULATION OF NATURAL ENEMIES 11. AVOID OR REDUCE CHEMICAL PESTICIDES APPLICATION - Specific activities and/or specifically what your solution does to address the identified problems above in the Context Analysis section - How you ensured your solution was adopted and promoted change in human activities - Enabling conditions - Key success factors - Any obstacles and how you overcame them

Results

What is the environmental or ecological challenge you are targeting with your solution?

AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS ADOPT BAD PRACTICES WHICH ARE NOT COMPLYING WITH ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENT, REASON WHY IT IS CONDUCIVE TO LAND AND FOREST DEGRADATION, BIODIVERSITY LOSS, extinction of species

Describe the context in which you are operating

APRODEA is a civil society member of GEF-CSO NETWORK and IFOAM, we work with communities around the KAHUZI BIEGA FOREST(KARK) and 32 720 small agricultural producers . To find ways of mitigation to the challenges toward
a) Forests: communities around the KAHUZI BIEGA PROTECTED FOREST usually cut trees to make charcoal and construction, this practice leverage gorilla and elephant to disappear and threatened species or habitat
To find ways of mitigation to this, we have done investigation in this forest to select the threatened species, their altitudes and we have done investigation in the villages and fields of communities so that we may identify the areas having the same altitudes of the areas in the Forest where these species were in order to reafforest them there in so that communities may use these trees in the future and avoid cutting trees in the forest
b) Land : we adopt organic farming to respect for natural ecosystems. We aim to preserve the natural balance of soil and plants, - promote recycling, strike balance in terms of organic matter select animal and plant species adapted to natural conditions-full respect the landscapes and incultivated areas, preserve biodiversity

How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?

Some threatened species like bamboes are domesticated by communities instead of going to cut them in the KAHUZI BIEGA NATIONAL PROTECTED FOREST Forestations which belong to communities by trees like threatened species of KAHUZI BIEGA FOREST Good agricultural practices improve the productivities and leverage the biodiversity conservation

Social/Community

Water

Water are managed by good practices against erosion

Food Security/Nutrition

Food security is improved (food quantity because of adopting good species, food quality because we use organic farming, food safety etc.

Economic/Sustainable Development

APRODEA helps producers to access to various markets by teaching them pior the requirement of each market and they sell and gain money

Climate

Sustainability

The organic and ecological practices leverage producers to produce food of hight quality which they
Sell to local, national and international market

Return on investment

620 OOO dollars the result is more because every producer if he sells 2000 KILO X 2 DOLL HE GOT 4000X 32 000=120 000 000 Dollars for all the community with whom we work
Replication and Scale

How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?

By training and pilot project they come to learn and to their they fieds to put in practices
