An Overview Of Our Solution
N/A
- Population Impacted: 5,000 people
- Continent: Africa
Context Analysis
Only 15 percent of the Sierra Leone population have access to the national grid. It is a matter of truth that there is a problem of electricity in rural communities. Furthermore, the living condition of communities’ members is poor on an average 80% of citizens cannot afford living on $1 per day. There is also the problem of huge dropout of girls from schools which had led to teenage pregnancy and early marriage. With the above problems we as young people see that is important to engage in activities that provide solutions to the above problems.
Describe the technical solution you wanted the target audience to adopt
Our recycling approach for providing electricity is an innovative approach by helping provide rural communities with electricity which is cheaper, affordable and reliable compared to the existing fossil fuel generators; These renewable energy are options that can provide the ultimate solution to the energy crisis in Africa today, we have several renewable energy models to choose from depending on the communities’ landscape. We have hydro generator, windmill, fuel free generator, solar charging systems etc. The additional advantage of all these technologies provide less carbon content which reduce global warming, these technologies are smart climate change
technology which are needed by the global community. Using Scraps materials to build these technologies which is a cheap, affordable approach for deprive communities like mine where to get resources to have energy is very difficult. This approach is an open opportunity not only to produce electricity but to also to
Type of intervention
Describe your behavioral intervention
We are installing green energy technology we built from recycling materials which is an ideal approach to combat change compared to using the fossil fuel generators, in ensuring this we have implemented some of our recycling renewable energy systems in the following.
By giving a forgotten society especially where they think only electricity is for rich people, and
feel much need of electricity, for student to study, home evening activities that requires lights, will
make the population understand that the money that buys Kerosene and fuel to light the normal
traditional lights can be invested in other activities and reduce the carbon being inhaled while the
lights is on, we have proven the possibility by following examples and still undergoing
implementation.
- We have Installed the first solar and wind energy (Hydride of solar and windmill) in Small
village communities that are over five thousand beneficiaries
- We have Built and installed windmill using local materials and installed a 5KW mobile
charging system for community.
Our project also brought changes by electrifying a big number of communities’ health centers
which is serving over fifty villages.
- We have Powered study grounds for both primary and secondary pupils by Providing basic
light for 24 bases in more than five villages.
As needed, please explain the type of intervention in more detail
As a team most of us grew up in the conditions that tells us that it not easy to achieve most the things because we feel like we don’t deserve it, as the world technology advance we want to prove the world that energy can be for all and affordable. Kerosene lamps are expensive to operate. Kerosene is costly both for low income households that buy it And for governments that subsidize it. In parts of Africa, for instance, kerosene costs make up 10-25% of household monthly budgets Also the recycling approach is an innovative approach (using scrap PVC pipes as turbines for the windmill, scrap metals as the turbines for the hydro generator, old generator frames as house for the generator etc) helps in provide rural communities with electricity which is cheaper, affordable and reliable compared to the existing fossil fuel generators, these renewable energy options provide the ultimate solution to the energy crisis in Africa today, we design and fabricate several renewable energy options to choose from depending on the climate conditions and options available like wildfowling stream, sun etc We have hydro generator, windmill, fuel free generator, solar charging systems etc. all these technologies provide less carbon content which reduce global warming, these technologies are smart climate change technology which are needed by the global community.
Describe your implementation
❖ Produce up to5KW for the SoWind Technology helped to create the awareness of our
dream project and made the community that we have already installed the Windmill see
the difference but also proved what seemed to be impossible to be possible.
❖ We were sure that the solution is being adoptive when we have received different
demands from other communities.
❖ We were able to power the entire community including schools, hospitals, youth
centers we knew that this something that can be done.
❖ Our success stories are many after powering two separate study ground for both
primary and secondary pupils we were also able to provide basic light for 24 houses
and power central mosque and church
❖ The challenges that we met people couldn’t believe us in the beginning, timing also
was another challenge because most of we are students was not easy to combine
schools and dedicate the time to the project
Our challenges also include Financial facility is needed to achieve our goals because we
need inputs to pay workers, buys more vehicles, more buildings etc. which all inputs are
needed to expand on the renewable energy options. In achieving the above milestone, we
need a dedicated and hardworking team to help us achieved this target, Mentorship, partnership is needed to help us achieve our set goals, we need experienced business personalities to learn from and use their experience to expand our renewable energy options.
External connections
In partnership with the government, our company generate electricity and give to
distribution companies such as Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority(EDSA).
Furthermore, as an affair of service, my team provide clean energy to remote areas that do
not have access to the national grid. And we promote and encourage girl child education
with an interest in technology we have strong collaboration with the University of sierra
Leone, United Nations Development Programmer(UNDP), United Nation Industrial
Development Organization(UNIDO), Ministry of Energy etc., we have a strong
management and business team that is capable to handle whatever scale of project
Who adopted the desired behaviors and to what degree?
In the communities where these systems are installed they have adopted these smart
technologies to prevent climate change, they have strong sense about tackling climate change and easy approach in solving it, we have increase awareness about the effect of climate change, over the past years most of these rural settlers where involve in deforestation, bush burning etc. which have be hindering the climate and affecting production, extinction of species, loss of ecosystems etc. Resident of these communities are victim of this problems so they are very happy for the awareness and the solution we have provided for them to tackle the problems,
through our interventions into this communities we have form climate change clubs in these communities so that we could be communicating with them frequently about increasing awareness about the climate change.
How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?
Our approaching in providing electricity from low carbon monoxide options is not only
saving the ozone layer but as well as saving the planet from green gas emission, we are
saving the natural environment and prevention the extinction of species, our options are
green energy option than are cheaper, safer and affordable compared the fossil fuel
generators, using the natural sunlight, wind, water, dustbin materials etc. as sources of
fuel to power solar panel, windmill, hydro, litter of light, our approach is environmental
friendly and it’s the best approach in solving climate change
What were some of the resulting co-benefits?
Our small scale renewable energy options have lots of benefit and transforming lives in the
implemented communities, our solutions saves the planets because there is no carbon monoxide
emission, we are creating jobs and livelihood for thousands of sierra Leoneans especially youth and women, we are training especially girls on the designing and fabrication of these systems. Through our implementations we have improved education in the different communities through the study hall we created so that students have access to study at night under a reliable electricity, which they currently lack and therefore limits their studying opportunities during the day. Hospitals are more efficient now because of our electricity provision for the hospitals so that pregnant women, kids have access to a health facility at any time. These are small health facilities that often operate without electricity, but would greatly benefit from a fridge, simple machinery and light to operate at night. Also, Kerosene lamps pose significant health impacts, due both to chronic illness resulting from inhalation of fumes and to risk of injury due to fire. There is evidence that exposure to the lamps, which are used indoors and in close proximity to people, impairs lung function and increases the risk for respiratory disease, cancer, eye problems and infectious disease, including tuberculosis.
Sustainability
Only 15 percent of the Sierra Leone population has access to the national grid. It is a matter of truth that there is a huge business potential in the energy sector. In partnership with the government, our company will generate electricity and sell to distribution companies such as Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority(EDSA). Furthermore, as an affair of service, my team provide clean energy to remote areas that do not have access to the national grid. And we promote and encourage girl child education with an interest intechnology. The Company produces renewable energy, which is sold to various communities throughout Sierra Leone. The Company's industry does not have any seasonality that affects it; therefore, we have the
Return on investment
Because of the low energy consumption of the rural homes we produce 50Watt for up to five homes which they can use to power bulbs, charge phones and few other low energy consumption devices, we increased our power up to 3KW which is enough to power more than fifty homes. we have increased in revenue generation in the country and increase household income of women who are involved directly in using this electricity to increase their revenue in the business. We have increased in women participation in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Our initial investment was $250 per village and within six months we have recover this cost and replicate the installation to another communities.
How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?
We have develop and tested different prototypes of different energy system, we have tested our innovations its not just an Idea, we have working prototypes of solar book which saves rural resident access to use their note book to provide them with light needed to study, Our SoWind(Solar & Windmill)serving village communities in sierra Leone, We are developing our 5KW hydro generator we built from recycling metals plats and other dustbin materials, we have also done the first Installation of the first solar and wind energy in Sierra Leone at Small Bo Chiefdom, Kenema District, We have Built wind mill using local materials. We have Installed mobile charging system for community use Produced up to 5KW. We have Powered communities’ health centres which is serving over fifty villages. We have Powered study grounds for both primary and secondary pupils we provide basic light for 24 bases for more than five villages. Myself and my team are busy improving these different products
