Solution

Describe your solution

This project will enable people in the Colonia Quintanilla community to have 169 families with approximately 464 inhabitants, to initiate the separation of waste from the households involved. With this separation will be obtained 12 monthly tons that will be processed, in the modality of "Compound of Trinchera", producing an approximate of 4 ton to the month of organic fertilizer; This fertilizer would be used in the improvement of soil of 1 ha and vegetable cultivation, increasing the microbial activity and change in the texture and structure of the same. The vegetables that would initially be cultivated are: Green chile, Cucumber, Radish, Leaf lettuce, chives among others. This would improve the nutrition of the families involved and at the same time their food security would benefit; Jobs would be generated and substantially benefited from the surplus of horticultural products when put on the market in the local market.
Implementation

Describe your implementation

The system of waste collection in the municipality of Jiquilisco, is based on XX trucks that circulates daily through the urban center, obtaining monthly XX tons, among them 50% or more, are organic wastes; Faced with such a situation will begin with the community XX to train / induce the separation of waste from their homes, thus achieving the collection of waste already separated and even define days of the week in which will be collected the two different types of waste for their respective process or final disposal. The project is still in the process of implementation, but based on experiences in other communities, visits will be made to share the demonstration of benefits and advantages of waste separation and proper management in organic for the production of organic fertilizer. A community of our municipality already has a similar project, which allows us to know this positive experience. In addition, in the periphery of the municipality, there is a suitable area (Land) to carry out the processing of organic waste, which will also allow the creation of a vocational area for schools and generate from there the awareness of the management of "garbage". Key success factors include experience of the community "Cruzadilla de San Juan", of separation of waste and management of organic; good relationship with the Colonia Quintanilla 1 community, to carry out this change; Land for the management and conversion of waste to organic fertilizer. The proposed initiative or project is still a vision of work that is in the process of implementation, so there is no obstacle or problem encountered in its implementation. It is worth mentioning that as planned and according to previous experiences there will be no difficult situations to overcome.

External connections

1. The Colonia Quintanilla 1 community and its 464 inhabitants, who would be directly involved and would be the direct beneficiaries, in the separation of the wastes, the production of vegetables and the use of the organic fertilizer generated. 2. What is the environmental or ecological challenge you are targeting with your solution?

No response

Describe the context in which you are operating

The annual average of total waste, generated by the municipality is 2,100 tons, causing an investment of $48,544.8 USD annually, in the management and final disposal of solid waste in the total community. This project would decrease by 10 %, with the separation and reuse of organic waste, visualizing increase and implementation throughout the urban area, thus reducing the current cost that is paid for the management, and the reduction of contamination of the same Which causes in the end.
Likewise, the production of compost, or organic fertilizer to improve soils and cultivation of vegetables, under the "Organic" modality, would contribute to the generation of employment, and at the same time the improvement in nutrition of xx families benefited directly.

How did you impact natural resource use and greenhouse gas emissions?

-Reducing the amount of organic waste that goes to the "dump", separating them from the homes and processing them and turning them into organic fertilizer. -Improving the quality of soil, with the use of organic fertilizer for the cultivation of vegetables. -Focus on the population of community Colonia Quintanilla 1 to avoid throwing wastes to the street or open air, and thus prevent the proliferation of flies and thereby reduce intestinal diseases.

Social/Community

The generation of spaces of occupation and / or employment, is projected with the cultivation of vegetables, to establish at least 12 direct jobs working in the production of these; As well as the organization of the community that comes to strengthen the management processes as a development tool.

Water

The decrease of the use of chemicals, in the production of vegetables, favors the improvement of soils, avoiding contamination, of the soil and water at the same time. During the winter, when using organic fertilizer, a better texture of the soil is achieved, facilitating filtration and thus increasing the internal reserves of water

Food Security/Nutrition

Families benefited (169) direct, will have access to consumption of vegetable production, ensuring their food and nutrition, with clean and high quality products. Through the use of organic fertilizer generated from the waste process.

Economic/Sustainable Development

Climate

The areas and actions to work have no direct impact on the climate, because of their size.

Sustainability

The funding for this initiative in its entirety is intended to be obtained from RARE - Agriculture for Biodiversity, as a seed fund for the start of a project of wide magnitude and sustainability in time. In any case, the implementation of the plaza or market of agricultural products in general, will support and support this integral project: Waste management, Compost production or organic fertilizer and vegetable production under the organic mode.

Return on investment

The initial investment projection includes materials and equipment for the collection and separation of waste, the storage and processing of the waste, as well as the production of organic compost. Then we start the stage of production of vegetables with the fertilizer produced and establish the market place for horticultural and livestock products that will be put on sale. The global approximate amount is between 12 and 15 thousand dollars, the projection of the recovery will be based on the sale of vegetables and sale of organic fertilizer with farmers in the area.
Replication and Scale

How could we successfully replicate this solution elsewhere?

1- It is necessary to document each of the activities of the initiative in an orderly and sequential way, so that we can archive each step, if possible with photographs and videos. 2- The rest of neighborhoods and colonies of the municipality of Jiquilisco, would be the main candidates to consider to replicate this important project. 3- The reduction of the cost in the management of waste represents a high cost to the municipal government; Which would support the retort as soon as possible in the rest of the municipality.
