Revitalizing oceans and the coastal communities that depend on them

Fish Forever builds on the 100 community-led solutions from 48 countries submitted to Rare’s first-ever Solution Search in 2011. Rare’s flagship program revitalizes marine habitats and livelihoods by empowering communities through clear rights, strong governance, local leadership, and participatory management.

Fish Forever
Solution Search'11: The first edition of Rare's global search for solutions to the world's most pressing environmental problems

Through the Solution Search program:

Fish Forever began as ‘Marine Momentum’ the same year Solution Search was launched, in 2011.

One-third of all 100 solutions submitted contained a technical program element related to managing access in marine areas. Another entry reported on the success of low-cost stock assessments. Rare decided to take these ideas on board through Fish Forever.

Today, Fish Forever is a community-led and comprehensive solution to revitalizing coastal fisheries and the communities that depend on them. Its goal is to engage one million fishers and 500 local leaders across ten countries and protect 125,000 square miles of coastal waters.

In addition to Fish Forever, solutions from the first-ever Solution Search have made their way into marine portfolios of many international organizations, including the Wildlife Conservation Society.
