Reducing Our Risk

Stanton County Emergency Management

Stanton, NE, USA

An Overview Of Our Solution

My name is Mike Frohberg. I volunteer with the Stanton County Emergency Management office here in Nebraska. The solutions to saving lives during severe weather and winter weather that I have done here is educating children in our public schools. Every year during severe weather awareness week and winter weather awareness week, I talk to kids from grades K-4th about how to stay safe, how to create an emergency plan, and how they can inform their parents on where to find useful information. Over the course of the last 5 years of doing this, we have watched the kids really hold on to what I have taught them and every year I come back, they are eager to learn!

Problem

Identify the likelihood and frequency of this hazard

Very Likely and Frequent for tornados and winter weather

Explain how vulnerable the community is to this hazard

Woodland park and Stanton County is vulnerable to a tornado hazard. They have trailer parks, numerous houses, and is a rural community.

List the potential affects of this hazard

Loss of life, property, livelihood if a tornado were to hit. I train on how to keep them safe in a basement or in shelter during a natural disaster.

Identify how sensitive the community is to these affects

The community is sensitive to tornados and vulnerable, much like most communities would be in a natural disaster.
Action

Preparedness Goal

To train and teach students and inform the public on how to be prepared for natural disaters.

Implementation Actions

1. Hold community meetings and recognize different disaster risk factors within the community.

2. Inform the public through media, handouts, and public education.

3. Set aside a day to program weather radios for free ( we have done this with Hy-Vee the last few years and have had much success)

4. Keep reaching out to kids in schools and give them information to take home to their families.
